Mat 22:36-40 |
Is the command to love one another a new command for New Testament Christians? |
| 2LG | Deut. 6:5 | The command to love God was an Old Testament law. |
| 3LG | Lev. 19:18 | So was the command to love your neighbor. Therefore Jesus was not making up new commandments for New Testament Christians. (c.f. 2 John 6) |
| 4LG |
Rom. 13:8-10 |
Paul sums up the 10 commandments with 1 word, love. |
| 5LG | Matt. 5:17,18 |
What did Jesus teach about the law of God? --The law will not be abolished. --The law will not be changed. |
| 6LG |
Matt 5:21, 22 |
Which law was Jesus speaking of? --Did Jesus weaken the law or did he intensify it? --He intensified it by applying to more that the action, but even the thoughts. |
| 7LG | Matt. 5:27,28 | Did Jesus do away with the law forbidding adultery? |
| 8LG |
James 2:10-12 |
Did James say that Christians need only keep nine of the commandments or all ten? Does this include the Sabbath? Does James expect NT Christians to be judged by the law in the future? |
| 9LG | Rom. 3:28 | It seems as though Paul may be saying that since we are justified by faith, we have nothing to do with the law. Is this what he is saying? See the next reference. |
| 10LG | Rom. 3:31 | We must agree with Paul's conclusion that grace doesn't nullify but it builds up the law. Any other conclusion in other difficult passages is a misinterpretation of Paul. |
| 11LG | Col. 2:13-17 |
Paul speaks here of a law and Sabbath days
which have been abolished and nailed to the cross. We must begin with Paul’s
conclusion above. Then ask which law and which Sabbath days is he referring
to? --Only those which are a shadow of Christ. --Which Sabbaths are a Shadow of Christ? See next text. |
| 12LG | Lev. 23:3, 26, 32, 27 |
This text speaks of the weekly Sabbath. --The yearly Sabbaths involve offerings. They are ceremonial Sabbaths, governed by ceremonial laws which were a shadow of Christ who was the reality to come. The ceremonial laws were abolished, not the ten Commandments. |
| 13LG | Rev. 14:12 | How are God's people described in Revelation? Do you want to be counted among those who keep God's law? |
